Mizuno Ami was the genius of Jyuuban Middle School; that was all she needed to be. If she wanted something more, a friend, she was still fine.
Meeting Tsukino Usagi made everything different. But when Ami began to realize - or think - that Usagi's overtures of friendship were strictly designed to manipulate her into become a sailor senshi, a soldier of justice, she refused. She had to study.
Somehow, the two worked out their issues and brought other members to the team once Ami became Sailormercury, the soldier of Water and Wisdom. As they met, Ami found it hard to rely on the others, assuming they were not true friends and would not help her in times of need.
Going overboard in efforts to try to be more what they expected, Ami even made herself ill. It wasn't enough. Gradually, the sailor senshi's teamwork weakened as each of them became preoccupied with their own concerns.
It was easy for Kunzite, an enemy from the Dark Kingdom, to find Ami alone. He used an extraordinary amount of power designed to bring her under his control and brought her back to the Dark Kingdom with him as his ally and servant.
Mercury became a soldier of the Dark Kingdom designed to destroy the sailor senshi; that was all she needed to be.
